Ice Transport & Ice Weighing
Beside an efficient production of ice, proper storing and transportation equipment are important parts of an entire plant setup. Handling of ice is difficult as its properties are different to conventional bulk materials. Flake ice is dry and crisp while plate ice is wet and sticky. Also the behavior of ice varies with ambient temperature, air humidity or the ice thickness.

Screw conveyors are the most efficient and economical way to transport ice. KTI has developed different models of screw conveyors especially for transporting ice to places of demand. For maximum flexibility, KTI offers a broad portfolio of screw conveyors that covers most applications and customer requirements. Further, KTI also supplies custom-made products for special applications where common designs are not sufficient. Thanks to intelligent control, several screw conveyors can be connected in a series for complex transport routes.
All KTI screw conveyors for ice transport or ice discharge from the ice storage, are made of hot-dip galvanized steel. For special applications KTI also supplies screw conveyors made of stainless steel or with plastic coating.
Basically, there are two different types of screw conveyors available: single or double open-trough screw conveyors and tube screw screw conveyors.
Pneumatic conveying is the most flexible solution for transporting ice. On the one hand the ice can be transported over long distances, on the other hand the flexible conveyor hose can be placed easy and quickly to the place of demand. Thus, the location of the ice plant plays only a minor role.
Depending on the size and application, KTI pneumatic ice conveyor systems are installed either directly in the ice plant (up to 50 tons daily ice production) or inside the ice storage or mounted in a separate steel frame. A pneumatic conveyor system consists of a high performance fan, a rotary valve, a weighing screw and optionally a cyclone separator.
The blower unit generates the required air flow, which is pushed through the rotary valve. The weighing screw continuously weighs the ice before feeding into the rotary valve. However, it is also possible to use a load cells at the outlet instead of weighing screws. The cyclone separator separates the ice from the airflow by releasing the air at the top and the ice at the bottom.
An interconnection of several blowers makes it possible to supply several places where ice is needed simultaneously. Further, KTI offers intelligent control for pneumatic delivery systems to implement fully automatic systems, which can be integrated into the customer’s system and brings the possibility to control the plant centrally.
The weighing of ice plays an important role in all applications, since usually an exact amount of ice has to be dosed. KTI has the right weighing systems in its portfolio meeting the most common requirements.
KTI weighing screws transport ice to the dedicated destination while weighing it continuously at the same time. KTI offers weighing screw conveyors with capacities of 300 kg to 1000 kg.
An alternative is the simple but reliable weighing hopper. This is filled with ice and opens as soon as the desired weight is reached. The ice falls onto a conveyor belt, into mobile bins or into a screw conveyor for transport. Weighing hoppers are available from 250 kg to 1200 kg.
For special application it is necessary to crush ice to a certain size. KTI has developed special ice crushers which offer the possibility to crush and convey ice simultaneously. KTI ice crushers are made of galvanized steel and installed in a conveyor trough. For special applications KTI offers up to four crusher screws in a large-scale conveyor trough.
